Social media has become a part of our daily lives, and criminals have found it an attractive vehicle to perpetrate crimes.  Anonymity provided via social media allows a person to easily portray another user’s identity.  Cyber criminals exploit such vulnerabilities to steal user credentials, which in turn can be used to breach a company’s network infrastructure.

Companies have made social media a vital part of their interaction with customers.  With a broad view of the organization and the ability to assess risk, Internal Auditors have taken notice of the risks and challenges presented by social media.  Let’s explore.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand various steps and methods used to carryout cyber-attacks through social media.
  • Demonstrate methods individuals can use to limit cyber-attacks and identify possible threats.
  • Ideas for how Internal Auditors can gain coverage over social media in their audit plans.
