In 2014, the Ohio Department of Taxation implemented a higher level of scrutiny to help curb taxpayer fraud. The additional measures resulted in delays processing refunds for many Ohio taxpayers. This year, Ohio continues the trend by adding safeguards intended to further deter fraud; these safeguards will likely delay return processing and refunds.
Ohio will apply a filter that will screen all 2014 returns requesting refunds. The filter will assign a “fraud” factor which might result in additional review. If Ohio pulls a particular return for review, the taxpayer will receive a letter requesting them to complete an “identification confirmation quiz” before the state will process the return. The quiz can be completed on the state’s website, as directed by the letter. Alternately, a taxpayer can dial an 800 number to complete the quiz.
This additional step will undoubtedly delay return processing – direct deposit requests could take up to 15 days, while issuance of paper checks could take up to 30 days.
These measures will likely impact a number of taxpayers so be aware that you may receive a letter requesting additional action. While processing delays may occur, we support Ohio’s efforts to address this important issue.
